Mr. Steuerman gained significant recognition as an international soloist and recitalist after achieving second place in the Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1972.
He performed as a soloist with the London Symphony under the baton of Claudio Abbado, with the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Lord Menuhin and Vladimir Ashkenazy (with whom he played Britten's Concerto at the Athens Festival).
Jean-Louis made his debut at the BBC Promenade Concerts in 1985 to critical acclaim, performing Bach's Concerto in D minor with the Polish Chamber Orchestra. He also appeared with the English Chamber, Hallé, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta.
He has performed alongside the Gewandhaus Leipzig Orchestra with Kurt Masur, the Basel Symphony with Heinz Holliger, the Helsinki Philharmonic (Tippett Piano Concerto), Zurich Tonhalle, Berlin Symphony, Nouvel Orchestre Philharmonique, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, Petrobras Symphony, Brazilian Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
He undertook major tours in Europe, North America, and Japan, performing in premier recital series. As a chamber musician, he has played with some of the most renowned international musicians.
His recordings for Philips Classics include Scriabin's solo piano works, Mendelssohn's complete piano and orchestra works with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Bach's piano concertos with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and Bach's Six Partitas, a recording that earned him the prestigious Diapason d'Or.
