bio
Renowned by both the audience and specialized critics for his intense portrayals of roles such as Nabucco, Rigoletto, and Giorgio Germont in opera theaters in Brazil and abroad, Rodolfo Giugliani is an authentically Verdian baritone, with a dark, velvety, and dense timbre.
Born in São Paulo, he was a student of the renowned tenor Benito Maresca. He won three editions of the Aldo Baldin Competition and took the first place in the Maria Callas International Singing Competition (São Paulo), Bidu Sayão Singing Competition (Belém-PA), Vozes do Brasil Singing Competition (Rio de Janeiro), and the Jaume Aragall International Singing Competition (Barcelona, Spain). In 2016, his interpretation of the character Iberê in Carlos Gomes' opera "Lo Schiavo," staged at the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro, earned him the A.P.C.A award as the best lyric singer.
Rodolfo has also performed as Ezio (Attila) in Barcelona and Santiago de Chile, Iago in Otello, which he sang in 2015 in Montevideo, and the Conte di Luna (Il Trovatore) at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in 2016.
In Puccini's operas, he has embodied Scarpia (Tosca), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Gianni Schicchi, and Michele (Il Tabarro), the latter title at the Teatro di San Carlo, Naples, in 2016. From Mascagni, he portrayed Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana (Mexico City); from Giordano, Gérard (Andrea Chénier); from Leoncavallo, Tonio in Pagliacci.
Other notable roles include Enrico in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, the protagonist in Carlos Gomes' Colombo, Matteo del Sarto in Busoni's Arlechino at the Theatro São Pedro in São Paulo, Albert in Massenet's Werther at the Opera de Las Palmas, Spain; Macbeth in Macbeth in Trieste; Giorgio Germont in Mexico, and Renato in "Un Ballo in Maschera" at the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro and in Belém do Pará. In 2019, he portrayed Iberê in the Italian premiere of "Lo Schiavo" in Cagliari, Italy, and Dom Carlo in the opera "Ernani" at the Manaus Opera Festival.
A significant moment in Giugliani's career was his participation in the 2017 Klassik in den Alpen opera concert in Vienna, where he shared the stage with the renowned Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča.
reviews
"Rodolfo Giugliani, a talented Brazilian baritone, owner of a beautiful and powerful voice, starred in one of the most remarkable and applauded performances, especially on Friday: the Te Deum from Tosca. With a consistent interpretation that naturally arises when the due weight is given, the proper intonation to each word, Giugliani delivered a strong and expressive Scarpia. His performance as Michonet in "Ecco il monologo" from the opera Adriana Lecouvreur was also excellent, where theatricality is absolutely crucial for success."
