Composer, conductor, and pianist, Guilherme Bernstein is the artistic director of the Ouro Preto Opera Festival and conductor of the UNIRIO Orchestra, where he has been a professor of Conducting and Orchestral Practice since 2004.
His compositions include five operas, three symphonies, and other orchestral works, eight song cycles, dozens of piano pieces, from sonatas to small teaching pieces, as well as compositions for choir and choral arrangements. His Piano Concerto and Serenade for Strings were published by the Brazilian Academy of Music and performed in Brazil and abroad. Guilherme also composed the soundtrack for the film "O Outro Lado da Rua."
He served as the Principal Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipal Theatre of Rio de Janeiro and, for several years, as the Musical Director of the Barra Mansa Symphony Orchestra, a leading ensemble of the Music in Schools project. He has also conducted the National Symphony Orchestra - UFF, Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of Porto Alegre, Symphony Orchestras of Espírito Santo, Goiânia, and Recife, Experimental Repertoire Orchestra, among others.
Guilherme Bernstein holds a Bachelor's degree in Musical Conducting and a Master's degree in Composition from the School of Music at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He has a postgraduate degree in orchestral conducting from the Hartt School of Music in the USA and a doctorate in Music from UNIRIO.
Guilherme Bernstein is the author of the book "On Poetics and Form in Villa-Lobos - Primitivism and Structure in Orchestral Choros" and co-author of "From the Dawn's Boredom to the Uirapuru - Commented Study Scores," as well as an editor of various scores from the Brazilian orchestral repertoire.
